Modalities to relieve pain during oocyte retrieval: A brief review

Abstract: Ultrasound-guided transvaginal oocyte retrieval has replaced the earlier more invasive laparoscopic approach. Despite being a short procedure lasting for about 10 to 15 minutes, it is associated with significant pain. Management of pain during oocyte retrieval is vital to ensure patient comfort and treatment success since majority of the couples undergoing in vitro fertilization are already under great stress. Furthermore, psychological well being has been reported to impact implantation rates. Various methods have been suggested to alleviate pain and increase the chances of successful oocyte retrieval. This is a brief review of the different modalities used to relieve pain during oocyte retrieval.

Advanced sperm selection techniques and their effects on ART outcome

ABSTRACT: Sperm selection in vitro has a direct impact on paternal contribution to preimplantation embryogenesis. Conventional sperm selection techniques are based on microscopic assessment of motility and morphology alone and do not include characteristics that influence the fertilization potential of spermatozoa. Chromosomal aberrations have been readily noted in sperms classified as normal via the Strict Kruger morphological assessment, questioning the value of using this parameter for sperm selection in intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles. Furthermore, several studies have demonstrated that visual evaluation alone may inadvertently facilitate selection of sperms with compromised developmental, cytoplasmic, and nuclear competence. Hence, advanced techniques have been developed to address these issues in sperm selection. This review summarizes literature evidence on various advanced sperm selection techniques and their impact on assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcomes.
