NEWS: Study Highlights Association between Poor Response to Ovarian Stimulation and Higher Miscarriage Risk in IVF Cycles

Analyzing data from the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority (HFEA) involving 124,351 IVF pregnancies, a UK study reported that the number of oocytes retrieved is strongly linked to clinical miscarriage rate. The study findings, which suggest the probable association between poor ovarian response and reduction in oocyte quantity and quality, are published in the latest edition of Human Reproduction.

Lower embryo exposure reported with the use of laser for zona pellucida drilling in PGD cycles

A recent randomized study reports that using laser, instead of acid tyrode solution (ATZD), for zona pellucida drilling results in lesser embryo exposure during biopsy in preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) cycles, and increases the availability of blastocysts for transfer and better treatment outcomes. Corifollitropin Alfa May be Safe and Effective for Repetitive Ovarian Stimulation in COS Patients

In order to avoid the first seven of the daily injections of FSH and the hypersensitivity or immune reactions due to this repetitive treatment, a single injection of corifollitropin alfa has been suggested for patients undergoing controlled ovarian stimulation (COS). Now, a multicentered phase III uncontrolled trial has reported that the use of 150 μg corifollitropin alfa in a standard GnRH antagonist protocol is safe and efficient, and has no effect on immunogenicity in normal responders undergoing up to three treatment cycles. Women with High BMI Produce More Follicles and Require Less Gonadotropins During IVF

Obesity adversely affects the reproductive health of a woman as it is known to cause anovulation, menstrual irregularities, and infertility. However, the findings of various studies on the influence of BMI on controlled ovarian hyperstimulation factors, such as quantity of gonadotropin and days of stimulation required, oocyte quality/quantity, maximum level of estradiol, and success of pregnancy, are inconsistent. A recent prospective study reports that women with elevated BMI produce more follicles, and require fewer days of stimulation and gonadotropin during IVF treatment, although no significant effects on pregnancy outcome rates were reported. Meta-analysis Reiterates DHEA Supplementation Benefits in Decreased Ovarian Reserve Patients

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is considered to increase the chances of pregnancy in women with decreased ovarian reserve (DOR), and is frequently used in nearly over a third of IVF centers worldwide. Adding credence to the currently available level II and III evidences, a comprehensive review and meta-analysis has reported that DHEA supplementation improves pregnancy chances in women with DOR. Sperm DNA Damage Measurement by Alkaline Comet Assay May be Useful in Male Infertility

Low chromatin packaging quality in morphologically normal spermatozoa is one of the important factors that lower the fertilization capability of the sperm. Therefore, evaluating DNA integrity is essential to determine actual sperm fertility potential. A recent prospective study published in Fertility and Sterility provides new evidence that DNA integrity analysis using alkaline comet assay may be beneficial in diagnosing male infertility and predicting IVF outcomes. DHEA Supplementation May Improve Ovarian Stimulation Response

The results of a recent randomized, prospective, controlled study published in the journal, Human Reproduction, adds credence to the potential of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) supplementation in enhancing IVF treatment outcomes in poor responders. Continue Reading

Vaginal Progesterone Gel Offers Similar Efficacy and Better Tolerability Compared to Intramuscular Progesterone

Crinone® vaginal gel, a natural progesterone supplementation approved by the U.S. FDA for women undergoing assisted reproduction, has better tolerability and comparable effectiveness to intramuscular progesterone (IMP) for luteal phase support during in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) cycles, according to the findings of a prospective randomized trial published in the online issue of the journal, Fertility and Sterility. Novel Molecular PGD Technique Developed to Identify Chromosomal Translocations

Novel Molecular PGD Technique Developed to Identify Chromosomal Translocations

A team of researchers has developed a breakthrough embryo screening technique termed molecular preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), which uses a PCR-based protocol for analyzing translocations. The new approach, having the potential to identify more viable embryos for transfer, utilizes multiplexed short tandem repeat (STR) markers that are positioned on both segments of the translocated chromosomes during translocation analysis. The findings of the study have been published in the journal, Molecular Human Reproduction. Continue Reading

L-Thyroxin Supplementation Improves IVF Outcome in Women with Subclinical Hypothyroidism

The prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) is reported to be high in infertile women. Despite this, its management remains controversial owing to the lack of proven treatment benefits. Now, a recent prospective, randomized trial has highlighted the importance of levothyroxine (LT4) supplementation for achieving clinical pregnancies in women with SH opting for IVF-ICSI. The findings of the study have been published in the recent issue of Endocrine Practice. Continue Reading
