Non-invasive Diagnostic Tool Developed for the Detection of Fetal Aneuploidy

For the past few decades, researchers have been trying to develop a non-invasive genetic test that could replace the current ‘gold standard’ techniques, amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS), both of which are associated with a significant risk to the fetus and the mother. Now, scientists from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Maryland and Stanford University, California, have zeroed in on a novel prenatal diagnostic test for the accurate detection of fetal aneuploidy. Their study results have been published in the October issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The non-invasive diagnostic test involves the direct sequencing of cell-free DNA obtained from the plasma of pregnant women, using the high-throughput shotgun sequencing technology.
